My Father's Gift: How One Man's Purpose Became a Journey of Hope and Healing by Sixtus Z Atabong ISBN: 978-1-63393-675-1

Go to the restroom, grab your favorite beverage, turn off the cell phone, and buckle your seatbelt. You are about to embark on an emotional journey that you just can’t stop.

You will want to stock up on tissues before you start.  You will also want to keep an extra copy, or ten, of this book on hand.  That way when people ask you why you are crying, or smiling, or laughing, or irritated, or whatever emotion you are displaying, you can hand them a copy of this book so they can see for themselves.

We read over 200 books a year here at McClendon Villa.  That being said, you must know it takes a lot to make it onto our very short list of outstanding books.  Last year only five made it. This year so far, only My Father's Gift has made it onto that short list.

Atabong tells us the story of his father’s life along with how he and his father interacted with one another.  I have never met Atabong’s father, but I would have to believe that he is very proud of all that his son has accomplished.

It is very hard to believe that this author started this book shortly after declaring that he didn’t write.  He has done an outstanding job with this book and has told his story and that of his father very well.

My Father's Gift will tell you a story that will touch your heart like few books ever do.  I am glad we share the same adopted home state. We didn’t have to travel as far as the author did to get to Texas, but we both got here as fast as we could. He got here first.

Book Review: Base Camp Las Vegas: 101 Hikes in the Southwest By Deborah Wall

Base Camp Las Vegas: 101 Hikes in the Southwest
By Deborah Wall

We are not hikers.  We have been to state and national parks. However, Base Camp Las Vegas: 101 Hikes in the Southwest by Deborah Wall has made us really want to go on some of the hikes she describes.

The photographs are amazing and the print quality is great.  These two things together are worth well more than the cover price of this book.

The author has given would-be hikers everything they need to know for taking on these trails.  She tells hikers what to bring, where to park, what facilities are in the park, and so much more.

She has hikes in here for all people. There is at least one that she tells can be hiked in a wheelchair since the trail is on a boardwalk.

There are many fascinating details included.  She tells of hikes that include old movie sets, abandoned towns (ghost towns?).  There is even one hike that includes a town that was underwater for seven decades.  How cool is that?

We give Base Camp Las Vegas all five stars.  It would rate that high if it were just a picture book.  The photographs are awesome.

If you are a hiker, or even if you think you might want to try hiking, this book is for you.

Base Camp Las Vegas has 101 different hikes all within the Las Vegas area.  This means that all are within an easy drive of Las Vegas.

This would make a great gift for anyone on your list who likes the outdoors or likes to think they could be a hiker.
