Book Review: Naked Sales: How Design Thinking Reveals Customer Motives and Drives Revenue By Ashley Welch and Justin Jones

Naked Sales: How Design Thinking Reveals Customer Motives and Drives Revenue
By Ashley Welch and Justin Jones

Normally, we like books on how to sell more stuff.  Having studied at the feet of three top salesmen, we have observed what it takes.

Naked Sales works hard to teach readers what it takes to excel in sales.  However, it is a lot like playing skeeball.  Naked Sales by Ashley Welch and Justin Jones hits the 40 point skeeball hole but never makes it to the 50 hole.

What we mean is that they really come close to teaching what it takes to make great sales, but then they undo it.

Why do we say this?  If you are in sales, no one is going to say, “I would buy from that person if only they would use a little more street language in their conversation.”

We aren’t saying that the book contains vulgar language.  What we are saying is that one must avoid using words that one would expect from an uneducated person.

Also, in one graphic, the caption says “Client Could Care Less”. Probably what they meant to say is “Client Couldn’t Care Less.”  Are we nitpicking? Maybe.  But, if one is trying to improve his sales, he must put his best foot forward.

If you are trying to convince someone that you know your product will fill their need, you diminish your credibility when you don’t speak professionally.

Naked Sales is a good book and is deserving of three out of five stars. If one is looking to improve his sales, he will want to fill in the gaps that Naked Sales leaves by reading Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. He may also wish to pick up a copy of All In by Bill Green. Polish this up with How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success In Selling by Frank Bettger.

These four books together will give the prospective salesperson everything needed to be a super success in selling.

Book Review: Who Will Care For You: Formulating A Smart Family Plan to Age In Place by John Hemphill

Who Will Care For You: Formulating A Smart Family Plan to Age In Place
by John Hemphill

Sooner or later all families come face to face with a situation where a family member may need long term care.  Who Will Care For You: Formulating A Smart Family Plan to Age In Place by John Hemphill is about how to prepare for such an event in the event it happens.

This book is chock full of advice and suggestions about things like talking with an elder care attorney and making house modifications before they are needed.

Hemphill, a former CDC employee, has seen a lot of cases, including that involving his parents and his in-laws. He was able to plan ahead, but possibly not as much as he would have liked to.  He and his wife learned from their experiences, and those of others, and seek to impart that wisdom to his readers.

This book is well-researched.  It is well-written with minor editing flaws.  It is very readable and informative. We give Who Will Care For You all five stars.

There are a lot of things we wish we did not have to think about. Who will take care of us in the future is one of those things.  However, it is important to face some of these thoughts head on so that we don’t have to worry about them in the future.  Everyone should read this book, along with Master Your Cash Flow by Al Zdenek, in order to be prepared for our twilight years.  You will be glad you did.

Book Review: The Genetics of Health: Understand Your Genes for Better Health By Sharad P. Paul, MD

The Genetics of Health: Understand Your Genes for Better Health

By Sharad P. Paul, MD

When we read the title of a book like The Genetics of Health: Understand Your Genes for Better Health by Sharad P. Paul, MD, many of us would say, “I think I’ll lie down and let the feeling pass.” If you do, you will miss a great deal.

Normally, this is not the type of book we would read.  But, we really would have missed a very wonderful book. This book is chock full of information.

This book is also extremely entertaining and engaging. Dr. Paul makes the book come alive for us by sharing some anecdotes of interactions with patients.  Some of these are sad.

We think that The Genetics of Health deserves all five stars.  It is well-written, entertaining and enjoyable. It looks like it would be a thick, dry tome.  It is thick, but it is anything but dry.

Dr. Paul introduces us to some very complicated terms, but he explains those terms in simple, easy-to-understand English.

Most of our readers will probably look at this title and think that they would not enjoy such a book.  Please don’t judge this book by what you think it is.

Readers will come away from The Genetics of Health with a better understanding of diet, exercise, sun exposure, heredity, and so much more.  Did you know that coffee can be good for you?

We think that most readers would love to find The Genetics of Health in their stockings this year. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Book Review: Close Deals Faster By John Asher

Close Deals Faster
By John Asher

Many people are not aware of it, but everyone is in sales.  That’s right.  We all sell.  We might not have a product that we sell to earn money, per se, but we all sell something.  We may sell our ideas about a project to higher ups.  We may sell our thought about where to eat dinner.  A kid holding out for a later bedtime is selling.

That being said, we think that Close Deals Faster would be helpful for most, if not all, people but especially for those who are in Business-to-Business (B2B) sales.

Close Deals Faster by John Asher is very well-written.  It has been researched by Mr. Asher and his team over many years of actual belly-to-belly sales.

We won’t tell you what it is in this review, but we will tell you that Close Deals Faster actually has the secret sauce to making sales.  Having this secret sauce won’t guarantee a sale, but not having it almost definitely insures no sale will be made.

We learned this secret sauce studying at the feet of one of National Cash Register’s top salesmen years ago.  It was only after much failure that we learned this one all-important ingredient has to be in the mix to make the sale.  Close Deals Faster tells the reader that without having to spend years to learn it.

Asher writes in a very entertaining way.  He manages to teach readers the all-important lessons without coming across as one of those boring textbook writers.  He provides some real world examples to back him up.

We give Close Deals Faster by John Asher all five stars. We think it is concise, entertaining, and valuable.  If you are in sales for a living, you simply must read Close Deals Faster.  However, you should also read How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling by Frank Bettger.  The two books together will give you almost everything you need to know about sales.

Of course, everything else you need to know can be learned by listening to recordings of Zig Ziglar.  This will make an award-winning combination.  What you do with it is up to you.

We were sent a complimentary advanced reading copy of this book.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: The Ripple Effect By Greg Wells, PhD

The Ripple Effect
By Greg Wells, PhD

If you are looking for a good all around way to improve your life, The Ripple Effect by Greg Wells, PhD., is one way to do it.

This book takes the idea that we can make significant improvements in our lives by getting the proper things in our lives working together.

The Ripple Effect tells us how to get our lives working better by making small improvements (1%). We are told how proper diet, exercise, breathing, and thought patterns all work together to improve our lives.

This book works very well as a companion to Eat Wheat. Many of the foods suggested in The Ripple Effect are suggested in Eat Wheat.  The two books work very well together.

We give The Ripple Effect all five stars.  It is entertaining, informative, educational, and eye-opening.

If you are looking to improve your health (physical, mental, or both), The Ripple Effect can help you with that.

Book Review: Work It: Get In, Get Noticed, Get Promoted By Denise M. Dudley, PhD

Work It: Get In, Get Noticed, Get Promoted
By Denise M. Dudley, PhD

Have you ever wished you knew exactly what to do to get the job you wanted and then to succeed from the moment you started your new job?  Work It: Get In, Get Noticed, Get Promoted by Denise M. Dudley PhD may very well help you to do that.

This book is well-written and well-designed.  Dudley tells her readers not only what to do, but the whys behind the whats.

In Work It, readers will learn the behind the scenes ways to put their best foot forward in writing resumes, interviewing, and following up.

Work It even covers what to do in the unlikely event that you get fired or if you decide it is time to move on to a new job or even new career.

This isn’t one of those books where you are asked a series of psychological mumbo-jumbo kind of questions to determine what type of job you would do best in. Dudley assumes you already know that.

We think you will get a lot out of Work It.  We give it all five stars and think you will, too.

If you or someone you know are contemplating a change in jobs or even careers or if you are seeking a promotion in your present situation, Work It will be one of your best investments.

Book Review: The Third Circle Protocol: How to relate to yourself and others in a healthy, vibrant, evolving way, Always and All Ways By Georgina Cannon

The Third Circle Protocol: How to relate to yourself and others in a healthy, vibrant, evolving way, Always and All Ways.
By Georgina Cannon

The book The Third Circle Protocol: How to relate to yourself and others in a healthy, vibrant, evolving way, Always and All Ways, written by  Georgina Cannon, is a different approach to relationships than how most of us normally look at them.

This book provides worksheets throughout to help readers determine what they need, want, and expect out of a relationship.  Readers are also asked to determine what they are willing to give to a relationship.

The Third Circle Protocol is well-written and not full of the usual psycho-babble one normally finds in a book such as this.

We give this book all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars.

We were sent a complimentary Advance Reading copy of The Third Circle Protocol.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.
