Book Review: Tex-Mex Diabetes Cooking: More Than 140 Authentic Southwestern Favorites by Kelley Cleary Coffeen ISBN: 978-1-58040-665-9

I, David, have been a diabetic since July of 1976.  This condition - it is not a disease - has been with me a long time.  That is why it is always good to find a good cookbook that helps deal with reducing sugar and fat intake.

Although we differ with the ADA on the use of alcohol, as reported by the author, we think Tex-Mex Diabetes Cooking: More Than 140 Authentic Southwestern Favorites by Kelley Cleary is a wonderful cookbook. We feel it is best to stay away from alcohol completely because it can drastically lower blood sugar levels.

The instructions are easy to follow and clear.  Readers are told, in an easy to understand way, how to prepare each recipe.

We feel that Tex-Mex Diabetes Cooking is a great resource for diabetics.  We give it all five stars.

The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD ISBN: 978-0-8010-7522-3

You would think a book written by a brain doctor that taught much about brain science would be terribly complex and hard to understand.  You might also think it would be boring. Nothing could be further
from the truth.

In the book The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD, we find an easy to understand book that explains in great detail what we can do to avoid brain problems in our young ones and also in us as we age.

Most often when you read a book that deals in health issues, you find that the author either takes the side of science only or of a natural cure and Christian stance.  Jennings explains why and how both are right and gives scripture references to back himself up.

If you want to know what foods to avoid to protect your brain, it is in there.  If you want to know what to eat, it is in there, too.

If your church has small group Bible study classes, it would do well to create a course around this book.

Five Star Review

The Aging Brain is very well-written, easy to understand, and very educational.  We give it all five stars and know that, once you read your copy, you will want rate it that high as well.

Unsafe at Any Meal: What the FDA Does Not Want You to Know About the Foods You Eat by Dr. Renee Joy Dufault ISBN:978-0-7570-0436-0

Back in 1965, a very good year by the way, Ralph Nadar published his book, Unsafe At Any Speed. Nadar was attempting to warn the American public about the dangers of the automobile and particularly the Chevrolet Corvair.

In the book Unsafe at Any Meal: What the FDA Does Not Want You to Know About the Foods You Eat by Dr. Renee Joy Dufault, the author is seeking to inform her readers about the dangers lurking in our food.

The author makes a very compelling case regarding the Standard American Diet (SAD) and how it can lead to autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), and Alzheimer's disease. It even appears that it may be possible to reverse some of the effects of those conditions by changing our diet.

One would think that a book like this would be a very dry read, but it isn’t.  This book is well-written and not too academic for most readers. When she does speak in scientific terms, she explains those terms in a simple form that even a redneck could understand and get the point.

Dr. Dufault tells her readers what they can do to live a healthier life.  She explains how even a person on a very limited budget may be able to eat healthier.  Wouldn’t it be great if she and her associates were to write a cookbook that provides healthy recipes on an extremely low budget?

Five Stars

We give Unsafe at Any Meal all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars.  We think it is an important book. This book is well-written and easy to understand, even though it does take on a fairly complex subject.

This book should be made required reading for all high school students.  A few hundred congressmen should also read this book.
